Separate the shingle style from its performance rating

The color board is only part of the choice. Shingles with a similar appearance can have different construction, impact ratings and installation requirements. A product also has to work with the roof beneath it and the details around its edges.

For a replacement, we can discuss the covering together with the deck, underlayment, flashing and ventilation. For a repair, the first question is whether a compatible shingle can connect to the existing roof without damaging the material around it.

Three-tab, architectural, designer and impact-resistant shingles

These are useful ways to compare products, not four promises about what every shingle in a group will do. Availability and compatibility need to be settled for the actual roof.

ChoiceWhat it changesWhat still needs checking
Three-tab styleA repeating tab pattern gives the roof a flatter, more uniform appearance. The exact product, its instructions and whether a compatible repair material is available.
Architectural or laminated styleLayered construction creates a thicker, more varied profile. The individual product and the complete installation, including flashing and ventilation.
Designer or specialty profileA different shape, depth or texture changes the roof’s appearance.Product weight, compatible accessories and the support the existing roof can provide.
Impact-resistant optionA tested impact designation adds a performance characteristic. It can apply to more than one visual style. The named product, test method and current rating, rather than the word impact-resistant alone.

Impact-resistant shingle ratings and hail limits

A hail-resistant roof is still a roof that needs inspection after a concern. Test results describe how a product performed under defined conditions; they do not make every storm harmless.

The IBHS shingle ratings compare particular products using realistic hail impacts and visible damage measures. Look at the actual product and rating year when comparing an upgrade. A broad class label does not tell you everything about the result.

An insurer may offer a discount for qualifying materials, but eligibility and savings depend on that insurer. Settle that question with the policy provider before including a discount in the replacement budget.

Shingle choices for repair and replacement in Yukon

Our roof replacement guide explains the work around the covering. The roofing materials comparison looks beyond asphalt, and the roof-cost guide explains the assumptions behind the architectural-shingle planning example.

Repairing part of the existing roof

The replacement piece needs to fit the existing shingle layout and work beneath the overlaps. Surrounding shingles must be usable, and the repair needs sound decking and flashing connections. A close color does not solve a poor physical fit.

New material can also stand out beside weathered shingles. That appearance question belongs beside the repair scope, so the expected result is clear.

Choosing a complete new covering

A full replacement opens a wider choice of profile and color, but the system still has to suit the building. Added weight, roof slope and the way edges, walls and penetrations are detailed affect what can be installed.

Compare the complete work as well as the visible shingle. Leaving a failed flashing detail in place can carry an old water problem into the new covering.

Shingle option FAQs

Does an impact-resistant shingle prevent every hail problem?

No. An impact rating describes a test result for a particular product. The actual storm, installation and surrounding roof details still matter.

Can a few shingles be replaced without changing the whole roof?

Yes, when compatible material can be joined to workable shingles, sound decking and flashing. The roof repair page explains the conditions that determine that boundary.

Will a new shingle always match an older roof?

No. Weathering changes the surrounding roof’s appearance, and the original product may differ from a current option. Matching appearance and making a sound repair are separate questions.
